This book includes 58 full-color pages of Cuddly Bears. This includes a dozen different colors, more than a dozen different shapes, and a few different measures of size.
The first 12 flashcards feature a dozen different colors. The following flashcard has a clown with 12 balls of different colors. The next 12 flashcards feature objects (one per page) of different colors.
The next set of flashcards feature 14 different shapes. After this is a picture of all 14 shapes together.
The last set of flashcards feature a few different measures of size. This includes small, medium, and large; short, average, and tall; and thin and wide. The last pictures have all three sizes together for comparison.
The Cuddly Bears and balloons were hand-brushed with brush pens by artist Bearlyn. The shapes and words are also hand-drawn, which look more natural and are easier for children to reproduce than printed words.
At the beginning of the book, a Cuddly Bear waves hello. Advancing from one picture to the next, watch her hand wave. Similarly, a Cuddly Bear will wave goodbye at the end of the book. Encouraging the child to say “hi” and “goodbye” and to wave to the Cuddly Bears may help them feel that the book is slightly interactive.
Suggestions for using this book:
(1) The first few times using this book, name the colors, shapes, and sizes (like “red heart”) and point to them.
(2) Each time you read the book, point out something new (like “yellow shirt). Encourage the child to identify things with you, or on his or her own.
(3) Encourage the child’s interest in reading. If the child points something out, like “cute,” add to their remark as in, “Yes, that is a cute bear.”
(4) After reading straight through a few times, try asking a few questions, like “Which color is that?” Or ask, “Which of these bears is tallest?”
(5) You can also ask more challenging questions as the child becomes more advanced, such as, “How many sides does that square have?” or, “What letter does the color ‘blue’ begin with?”
